Expert Q&A

By James Brannon
Manager of Universal Travel Services

What should you look for when selecting a travel agent?

Some travel agencies have specialties. If you have a particular interest such as, let's say, France. You should look for travel agents that specialize in France or at least have a working knowledge of it. For example, if they don't know where Carcossone is then they don't know France.

Also look for travel agents that do not work out of their home. When they are home-based they do not have as many resources at their disposal.

Keep in mind some agents charge service fees. This is an unfortunate necessity for smaller agencies because of the commission cuts that have occurred in the industry in the past few years. So when you go to an agent for the first time don't be afraid to ask if they charge service fees.

Look for someone you feel comfortable with. Someone you trust will book the type of vacation you are looking for. Talk with them and really let them know what you are looking for in your vacation and if you are not completely satisfied with what they tell you let them know that. I am sure they will work with you to satisfy what you need. That is the mark of a true travel professional."
