My family is going skiing for the first time in New Mexico. What type of clothing should we take?

Warm water-repellant jackets are a good start in outfitting your family for a ski vacation in New Mexico. You'll also want to visit a sporting goods store for a number of other items to keep everyone warm and toasty. Each person should have the following:
- Extra-insulated ski gloves or mittens, with pads on the palm for keeping the tow rope from tearing them
- Ski goggles or sunglasses
- Warm hats or jackets with hoods
- Muffler or neck gaiter
- Ski pants (not jeans, as they will get wet and heavy)
- Silk underwear as a thin, extra layer of warmth to wear under ski clothes
- Neoprene face mask
- Ski socks, created for warmth without resorting to extra pairs of socks
- Sunscreen
The reason for all these layers of clothes is that it does get cold in New Mexico, and with the wind in your face at the top of a mountain, it is even colder. The sun is stronger at higher elevations, too, so sunscreen is essential, as well as eye protection.
Once you're at the ski site, sign up for a lesson. Most ski resorts have a ""never ever"" class for people who haven't skied before that includes ski rental, lift pass and lesson to help you understand the basics. Please note, too, that Taos does not have snowboarding, so if you have a teen that really wants to try that, you'll want to choose another resort.
A great Web site to check out is www.skinewmexico.com. It covers weather conditions and much more. If you haven't booked your trip, the site also offers packages. You'll find out about other snow fun, too, such as tubing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and more. Let it snow!
