Expert Q&A

By Laurie Borman
Managing Editor Rand McNally

Can you recommend any software to help plan a vacation?

There are lots of different software for travel needs, and Web sites, too. Both software and Web sites can be useful in vacation planning. A CD-Rom product allows you to customize your trip, print maps and save personal preferences for future trip planning. I'd suggest you check out Rand McNally's Tripmaker Deluxe 2000, which allows you to plan driving distances and routes between cities, choose hotels, check out restaurants, figure out costs, and more. Other software, such as Streetfinder, give you specific details on finding places within a city. Usually a Web site does not allow customization, or the extensive features of a software product. But regularly updated Web sites give you up-to-the-minute details on things like road construction delays or last-minute bargains. Randmcnally.com's new site includes features like finding points of interest along your route, not just simple routing from one address to another. Many other Web sites offer you the opportunity to find airline flights, book car rentals, and even choose vacation package bargains. Frommers.com, for example, features great examples of vacation travel bargains every month.

The book Net Travel: How Travelers Use the Internet, by Michael Shapiro, is a good resource for travel Web sites.

Good luck with your vacation planning!"
