Expert Q&A

When traveling, what can I do if I lose my prescription?

If you are out of town, but still in the U.S., and have lost or forgotten your prescription you can probably get it transferred from your regular pharmacy. Just go to any pharmacy, explain that you have lost your prescription and ask them to call your pharmacy at home to transfer the prescription. If there are no refills left, ask them to call your physician to get a refill.

Chances are your insurance will not cover the prescription, most insurance companies do not pay for lost medications. Also pharmacies out of your home state may not be set up to bill your insurance. Save the receipt just in case your insurance will allow you to submit it for reimbursement.

If your medication is a controlled substance, the pharmacy may not be able to transfer your prescription. It depends on the laws where you are, but many states require that a physician to be licensed in the state to fill a controlled substance. You might have better luck going to a clinic that takes walk in patients or an emergency room, explaining your situation and asking the doctor there to write a prescription."
