Expert Q&A

Due to the recent terrorist attacks, do you feel it's safe to take a cruise now?

Yes, cruising is still the safest way to travel than on a land tour. A cruise ship is like a floating hotel with security onboard and all. When you go on a cruise, just like at the airport, each passenger must have all the necessary documents required for travel: driver's license, passport or birth certificate and social security card and they have to have their cruise tickets with their name and destination on them. Everyone's bags are thoroughly scanned through the x-ray machine at the cruise port before they get to the ship. If anyone or anything looks suspicious, they have police right there to check them out and their bags thoroughly as if you were in the airports today.

Also, as long as the ships are close to U.S. waters, Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, etc., the U.S. coast guard is always on the lookout protecting the cruise ships in the water or in ports. Cruise ships sailing to Europe or other places far from U.S. soil are still protected onboard the ship by the captain and his crew of security guards and other people on the ship. There is no reason to be worried about going on a cruise. It's actually harder for someone to hijack a ship than a hotel on land or anything else because of all the pre-security measures in the cruise ports and onboard the ships as well.
