Expert Q&A

Can I take my newborn baby on a cruise?

For most cruise lines that are CLIA-affiliated, the baby must be at least 4-6 months of age, depending on the cruise line. The reason for this is that by the time a child reaches 4 months of age, their immune system is more developed and able to handle being around other people even with the germs in the air, without immediately becoming sick.

Another reason is a liability issue for most cruise lines in that, if something happens to your baby on board the ship, there wouldn't be much they could do to assist in any way medically speaking for any child under 4 months of age. There are some ships that actually don't even have a doctor on board, such as on Cape Canaveral Cruise lines."
