When driving long distances, what can I do to make sure my family is safe?

James Feldman, a.k.a. Dr. Travel, offers these tips:

  • Join AAA or some other emergency road service.
  • Take a cell phone or at minimum a CB.
  • Take flares.
  • Take thermo blanks and water containers.
  • Take granola, food replacement bars, etc.
  • Stop every two hours.
  • Fill up your tank every 200 to 300 miles. Sometimes you will hit traffic and not be able to find a gas station.
  • Empty your tank (go to the bathroom often) and fill up the gas tank.
  • Keep food in the car.
  • Tell people where you are going.
  • Call them at the rest stops to tell them where you are.
  • Check points make it easy to keep track of you in case of some catastrophe.
  • Think – stay on main roads.
  • Take precautions.
  • Do not pick up any one.
  • Do not stop on the side of the road for rest.
