When driving long distances, what can I do to make sure my family is safe?

James Feldman, a.k.a. Dr. Travel, offers these tips:
- Join AAA or some other emergency road service.
- Take a cell phone or at minimum a CB.
- Take flares.
- Take thermo blanks and water containers.
- Take granola, food replacement bars, etc.
- Stop every two hours.
- Fill up your tank every 200 to 300 miles. Sometimes you will hit traffic and not be able to find a gas station.
- Empty your tank (go to the bathroom often) and fill up the gas tank.
- Keep food in the car.
- Tell people where you are going.
- Call them at the rest stops to tell them where you are.
- Check points make it easy to keep track of you in case of some catastrophe.
- Think stay on main roads.
- Take precautions.
- Do not pick up any one.
- Do not stop on the side of the road for rest.
