Expert Q&A

By James Feldman (a.k.a. Doctor Travel)

Is it true that people are most likely to get sick on an airplane because of air re-circulating? Do those personal air purifiers marketed for travel work?

Airplanes re-circulate the air and as a result re-circulate viruses or any other airborne particles. There is an elaborate filtration system, but often passengers find themselves sick after a flight. The personal air purifiers are a minimal defense and due to their costs probably not worth it. Taking vitamins, getting sleep and rest are more of a defense than any other currently available deterrent. Don?t drink alcohol, cover your mouth when you sneeze or are in the proximity of others that are coughing or sneezing. Most people get sick from airplane travel due to more than just the re-circulated air."
