August 27, 2000

My mom and step-dad drove down to Bakersfield today for the funeral tomorrow. I stood my ground and told her I was staying behind. She wasn’t happy, but she didn’t say any more about it. After they left, we had the day to ourselves.

I had planned to see my brother’s family today, but when I called my friend Julie, she said this was the only day she could see me. So I made arrangements to meet my brother for dinner tonight, then headed out to Hollister to see Julie.

We’ve always gotten along so well, and it was a pleasure to spend the afternoon at her house. Her little boy, Derek, is 2 1/2 and is the cutest little guy. He and Aaron (3 1/2) found things to do together. Bryan was a little bored, until he found the Nintendo 64. Then he was fine. I got my baby fix. Little Jody was just born 2 months ago. I got to hold her, and feed her and let her sleep on my lap. She was so sweet! But I’m still done. I have my two boys, and I’m not having any more kids.

Julie fed us lunch and made brownies for us. While the kids played and watch Veggie Tales, we talked about what Jim was doing in Colorado (interviewing for a new job), how things were going on this trip (OK), and what it’s like to be a parent to two kids (fun and exhausting). I wish we lived closer to each other. I’d like to be able to visit her more often. But there’s always the telephone and e-mail and snail mail. That’s how we’ve kept in touch since graduation, with a few visits sprinkled here and there.

I really didn’t want to leave, but I wanted to spend some time with Jason, Natasha and Molly, too. So I loaded the boys into my parents’ car, and we drove back to Morgan Hill. Molly seemed to have a crush on Bryan, but he kind of did his own thing, playing Sega games in the back room. Aaron and Molly really hit it off, though. My mom had some toys back there, as well, and they got them all out. They were also running up and down the hall. At one point I heard Aaron say, “Molly, I want to tell you something. I love you.” And Molly, quite matter-of-factly, replied, “I love you, too, Aaron.” Then they ran back down the hall to the toys again.

It’s a shame they don’t get to spend more time together. But we live in different states, and there’s no way to visit more often than we do -- once or twice a year. That’s why I jumped at the chance to come here. Maybe some day we’ll be able to make more frequent trips.
