This morning I got to meet in person a writing friend I met on the Internet. I was so excited, waiting for Jen to show up with her two boys. It was quite obvious, though, that my mom and my grandma weren’t too happy I had chosen to spend "family" time visiting with a friend. Especially one I’d never met in person before. Not having spent any time on the Internet, neither could truly understand how you could become close to someone simply through written messages. But for me, I was as excited to get to meet Jen as I had been to get to see Brandi again. So I chose to ignore my family’s rolled eyes and muttered displeasures and enjoy the short time I had with Jen and her two sons.
We hung out at my grandma’s place for a while, then we all went to lunch at In-N-Out Burger. I had never been to one before. The menu’s spartan -- burgers, fries, shakes and sodas -- but the food is great! Jen went home shortly after lunch, and my mom, grandma, me and the boys headed back toward my grandma’s house. I thought it would be the perfect time to visit with Brandi again, so I suggested it. My mom and grandma had hoped we could go back to grandma’s mobile home park and take the boys swimming instead. But it was so hot out; I just wanted to be inside somewhere with air conditioning. I figured we could take Bryan swimming in the evening, when it was a bit cooler.
We never completely came to an agreement, but in the end, the boys and I were left at Brandi’s, while my mom and grandma went to the mall for some retail therapy. The boys had a great time playing together, and Brandi and I had a chance to catch up on all those lost years. She drove us back to grandma’s after her husband got home from work, but she couldn’t stay. She had to get back and make dinner for her own family. The rest of us grabbed some fast food, chatted for awhile, then headed to bed. We’ll be driving to Morgan Hill tomorrow for our second half of the trip.
I just keep thinking, though, about what it is that turns me into a petulant little girl every time I’m around my mom for a few days. For crying out loud, I’m a grown woman with children of my own. I need to start acting like it. Well, tomorrow is another day, after all.
