Shelly's Diary Entries

August 23, 2000

Today was like any other day. And then it wasn't. One minute, I'm loading the dishwasher and folding clothes, and the next we're in the car heading for a motel. I love to travel! Even when it's just for a few days, I feel excited to be going somewhere, to break out of the routine of a stay-at-home mom's day.

They weren't kidding about the motel being on the airport grounds. In fact, it's right next to a runway. We just got to watch three military jets take off. The first one was quite loud. I looked out the window, fearing we'd be deaf by morning. I was just in time to see the flame shoot out from the back as the plane left the ground. That's when Jim and I noticed two more of the jets waiting their turn. They're amazingly fast. It was only a few seconds from a dead stop until they were in the air. There have been other planes taking off and landing on this runway, but we've hardly noticed them.

Tonight is the final episode of "Survivor." I'm watching it while Jim's giving the kids a bath in the other room. What's strange is that I haven't watched more than 30 minutes total of this show all season, but I'm really interested to see who's going to win. Jim thinks I'm crazy to care, but sitting here watching this episode, I can see how people got so hooked on the series.

The kids are out here with me now. We're all getting into our beds. I can't really expect them to fall asleep until I turn off the TV, but I've got to see the end of this show. So Jim is going to turn off all the lights and tell the kids to stay in bed. Jim has to be up and out of here early tomorrow, but the kids and I don't have to leave for the airport until 10:00 a.m.

Tomorrow, I'll let you know who won "Survivor."
