Paris''s Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

August 2, 2000

This is our first week with our guests from India.Things have been going really well so far. They arrived in Calgary on Monday and we went to pick them up They were so tired from their journey. It was about 24 hours that they had to travel to get here. The time change has had a bit of an affect on them. Not their son of course -- children are resilient. :0) Once they landed in Calgary and went through immigration, they were officially landed immigrants in Canada. That was easy! :0)

I would have thought having people staying with me in my house that I didn't know, and that were from an entirely different culture, would be strange. But, it isn't. It's such a nice feeling to be able to help them. We went and got their Social Insurance numbers and Antonio is going to get his driver's license tomorrow. Kay had to go to the doctor for a surveillance of some sort. No big deal or anything just to get a record of it here in Canada. Life in India isn't all that different than life here actually. Except maybe that there are a lot less people here. They are very eager to get their lives started here.

Well, Antonio has had a bit of a problem getting his driver's license. Not that there are any complications, he just can't seem to pass the learner's test. He gets a bit confused on the wording of the questions so he's had a bit of a hard time. He'll get it though. I'm sure! They have had no trouble at all making friends and getting along fine in society here. Everyone is willing to help and give them advice or assistance. They've found everyone to be very friendly.

Their son, Adrien, has had no trouble at all adjusting! He had a friend within hours of getting here! Literally! He is great with my children as well. I haven't specifically asked Adrien how he likes in here in Canada, but he seems to be having lots of fun. A neighbor brought over a bike for him to ride, he's been playing basketball and tennis and video games (of course)!

So that about sums up their first week here in Canada. They haven't found a place to rent yet but I'm sure that will happen quickly enough. In the meantime, they can continue to stay here. So, first the driver's license, then house to rent, buy a car, and jobs. I'll let you know how it goes!

Paris and family! :0)
