Day 4
Terry and I need new batteries. Much to our dismay, they don't appear to
be available for sale at the hotel gift shop. :-)
The boys had another great day. Andrew is still boycotting his stroller, so he's getting some good use out of his shoes and our arms are getting an even better work out. We slept in a bit this morning, waking up just before 9:30 a.m.
Before I forget, let me toss out our most successful secret. Fruit. There are a few fruit stands throughout the park and each morning we would stop at the one on Main Street and grab a bunch of red grapes. They kept well in the backpack and were a good pick-up for the kids and us when we felt like we needed some refreshing. I highly recommend it.
After lunch Andrew did finally succumb to his exhaustion. He fell asleep
in my arms and didn't wake up when I transferred him to the stroller. He
took a nice long nap while Terry and Matthew rode Big Thunder Mountain
Railroad (or, as Matthew calls it, The Crazy Roller Coaster). I'm rather
perplexed to report that Matthew, my not-the-least-bit-shy 4-½-year-old, was
picking up on a 5-year-old girl named Zoe in line. When he and Terry emerged
from the exit, I heard all about Zoe, who she was there with, what she looked
like, and how she was "cute." Yikes! Zoe appeared to be returning
Matthew's interests. He even invited her to ride with him and "his daddy."
New ride for today was The Enchanted Tiki Room. Matthew wasn't too interested in going in but liked it once the show got started. Andrew looked around and bounced his leg and foot to the tunes. My warning for this ride is that it is just like Small World -- the tune will stick with you for WEEKS.
The cute award for today goes to a seeing-eye dog. While Andrew was sleeping, Matthew and Terry rode Alice in Wonderland. The sun had set and I was holding Andrew, but I wish I had figured out a way to take a photo. A visually impaired lady, her seeing-eye dog (a beautiful German shepherd that reminded me so much of our Shasta) and two friends got onto the Alice in Wonderland ride. That dog hopped right in there with a look on his face, like "OK, you want to do it, we'll do it." Now, I'm sure you can't train for that in guide dog school. :-)
We left the park tonight at 7 p.m. so we could make 8 p.m. dinner
reservations at Goofy's Kitchen. This is a terrific place for kids and we always eat
there at least once each visit. It's located in the Disneyland Hotel, so if
you aren't a resort guest you can always catch the monorail over to it.
Basically it's a buffet (but with excellent food for parents and kids).
The nice part is that the Disney characters come right to your table and
give some one on one attention to your children. They pose for pictures, they
sign autographs, and they goof around. We love it as much as the kids
do. Tonight the boys met Goofy, Max, Pluto, Jasmine and Baloo. The
characters change nightly, but you can call ahead and find out who'll be there that
night.
As I type this, the boys are all asleep and our bags are packed. Tomorrow is our last day here; our flight is an early evening flight, so at least we'll have most of the day in the park again. Disneyland has been fantastic (as usual), the boys have been terrific and we're already thinking about coming down for the opening of the California Adventure, opening in February 2001.
