Jill's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

June 26, 2000

The beach is everything the twins had hoped it would be. Their little 2-year-old voices didn't exchange dialogue with us as such, however their joyful squeals said it all. They saw the ocean from afar and pointed excitedly saying, "Look it! Water! Swimming!" They ran head-on into the water, donning their Hawaiian print one pieces. Piper was fearless! If a wave knocked her over, she would stand right back up without complaint to take on another one. And Bella was so precious. She'd get wiped out by a wave, run for Mommy, and then ease her way back into the water. When the concept of being waterlogged set in, we headed to our towels. It was time for the ultimate challenge -- helping two 2-year-olds build sand castles. The girls were really into packing the sand into the molds. They chanted "Pack in!" as they diligently worked. With anticipation, they turned over the mold and lifted it with Daddy's assistance. But here was their favorite part -- smashing the molded castle they just created!

Monday Evening
It was time to "go up on the boards" as the native New Jersians like to say. We hit the Ocean City Boardwalk with a passion -- a place loaded with 50 years of memories for my in-laws, a step back into independent teenage years for my husband and thrilling uncharted territory for the twins. Cotton candy, Italian water ice and cheese steaks were aplenty … as were the shops. Most importantly of course, Wonderland Pier had virtually no lines. This is where all the kid-friendly rides are. Being Monday night, we didn't have to fight the crowd -- what a joy! Isabella and Piper couldn't get enough. They rode everything from the carousel, the fire trucks and racecars to the jungle jeeps and shrunken hot air balloons. The grandparents were smiling with pride as they watched their granddaughters ride the tugboats their son rode 30 years before. High on life and filled to the brim with vanilla custard, the twins were more than happy about how their evening rounded out … so were Mommy and Daddy.
