Heather's Diary Entries

Diary Navigation:

August 19, 2000

I had to get up early this morning, so that we could make it to church. The one that I used to attend that had such a wonderful youth group. Raquel didn't want to go with us, but I had fun with mom and dad. The worship service was great, and the pastor, who has known me since I was 2, announced that I was there! I thought that was very sweet of him. Sometime during the service he had us break up into prayer groups with the people who were sitting around or near us. It was great because Yoni and his wife, Dalia, were sitting right next to us. (The one who took us on our midnight hike!) The five of us prayed for each other and it was wonderful.

DoorwayAfter the service I visited with many people who I had not seen in a long time. Then, Dad and I left to go do some last minute shopping for friends and family in the Old City and East Jerusalem. It was a good thing because otherwise I would not have been able to get everything I needed. I even bought Andrew some Turkish Delight. We stopped in at Jackie's shop and said some good-byes. I was so glad that I got to meet them. Dad and I stopped in a little spice shop before leaving. I wanted some Za'atah to take home with me. (I wonderful spice that is green and is used on breads for flavor.) The man was very nice, but didn't speak English. Dad asked him in Arabic how much the spice would be, and told him that I only wanted a little bit. When I pulled out my wallet to pay the shop owner, he nearly went crazy! He turned to my dad and asked him why I was handling the money! My dad did his best to tell the man that I was his daughter and was married and could handle my own money. He still didn't understand, but let me pay him anyway. It's amazing how some cultures are still a little behind! :)

After we were done shopping, Dad dropped me off at my friend Dania's house, where a bunch of people were getting together. We had a lot of fun. Dad stayed for a few minutes to chat with Dania. I was able to catch up on everyone's life, and we looked through photos and wedding videos! I had a great time.

Heather and friends.Shoshi made this incredible offer to drive me to the airport. Since dad had to get up early Sunday morning, I decided that it would be a good idea. I could not believe that she wanted to do that! I had to be there at 2:30 a.m., so that really meant a lot to me. After I spent some quality time with my family back at the house, and even some speed-walking with Dad, Shoshi came to pick me up, around 1:30 a.m. We got my luggage down to the car without much difficulties! It was nice because the drive to Tel-Aviv is about an hour, so it gave us some time to talk, plus the time we had after I checked my baggage. Before my trip, I had wondered if I would run into any of my old classmates who are all Israeli. I have not been able to keep in contact with any of them for some reason. Anyway, while in the airport, I passed the Information Desk and I noticed that one of the girls who I had gone to school with was working there! I stopped to say hi, and show her a picture of my kids. I wasn't able to talk long, as someone was in line behind me, but it was so nice to see her!

Shoshi and I sat and talked in a cafe for about an hour or so before I had to go up to my gate. She left because she had something to do the next day. I thanked her for bringing me, and I told her that I would keep in touch with her. After she left, I still had to sit in the airport for about three hours, but it wasn't bad. I passed the time by writing in my journal!
