Planning a Summer Vacation with Small Children

When her family went on a camping expedition last summer, Mcleish came prepared and used planning to make their drive as tantrum-free as possible. "We basically followed this same routine for any long trip we made, lots of stops with no more than two hours of awake-time driving for the children," she says. "And we bought some new toys for the trip – an old one, but tried and true. And for the camping expedition we took over the summer, we did get the DVD player for the car, which basically saved our lives. It's the only time we really let them watch TV except for at their grandparents' house."
She has also found an activity that the whole family could enjoy: "park hopping." "We go for scenery and open spaces – then we're happy and they're happy!" Mcleish says.
There are many ideas you can try to keep the older kids occupied. Babies tend to sleep most of the day anyway, so you'll just need to entertain here and there and primarily it will be you doing the entertainment. Many times, however, babies simply want to be held for comfort, and sitting in the car seat for long periods of time can make them long for that. If someone else is doing the driving you may want to try sitting in the back seat during the baby's awake times. That way you can entertain and comfort. If you are traveling by car try to get some holding time in each time you make stops along the way. Flying by plane is a good time to pull out the wrap or front loading carrier so your infant is close to you.
