Houseboat Vacations Offer Fun, Solitude and a Means to Reconnect with Family

  • Bring plenty of non-perishable groceries, as most houseboat refrigerators are small. Also, freeze meats to avoid spoilage.
  • Ask the houseboat rental facility how the houseboat is equipped. Many will provide linen packages so you can leave bedding at home. The less you bring, the less you have to load on the boat and the quicker you can begin your vacation.
  • Be sure to pack a first aid kit, recommends Ebel, as they are not provided.
  • Before you go, determine if your houseboat rental facility offers a hospitality boat. Hospitality boats will deliver items to your houseboat that you may have forgotten, fill your gas tank or help you if you experience problems while boating.
  • Since swimming is a popular sport for houseboaters, make sure all children are good swimmers. Ebel recommends taking swimming lessons prior to a houseboat vacation.
  • Ask the houseboat rental facility about the location of the closest hospital, just in case.
  • For those who love water sports, such as water skiing and fishing, a houseboat vacation is ideal. For families looking for something different, a way to reconnect or simply a dose of peaceful serenity, houseboat vacations can't be beat. "It was a great family vacation that we thoroughly enjoyed," Rognholt says. "When we talk about what we want to do for a family vacation each spring, a houseboat vacation always comes up."
