If You're Ever In San Diego, California...
By Jill Weinlein
San Diego has miles of sandy beaches for swimming, boogie boarding and shell collecting. Its bays are ideal for sailing and water skiing. Sea World, the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, Balboa Park and Legoland are all nearby. Here are a few places that rise above the rest!
Silver Strand State Beach, located between Coronado and Imperial Beach, is among the finest beaches in California. The water is warm and the waves are ideal for boogie boarding. At sunset, the views of Point Loma are exquisite. For $12 a day, you can park a trailer or RV at the beach campsite and enjoy a spot next to the powdery sand. At night, fires are permitted in the fire rings. Groups gather around to roast marshmallows, share travel stories and listen to the waves gently crash on the sparkling shore. For families, kids enjoy the DJ spinning the top songs from the '50s and '60s. Waiters sing along to "You Ain't Nothing but a Hound Dog" while serving burgers, salads, shakes and fries. Corvette Diner is so much fun it's worth the usual wait. We sat upstairs in the main dining area with a view of the serving staff singing and dancing to the Chicken Dance. As we ordered, our sassy waiter cringed at my choice of a Chef's Salad. "Hey, you are on vacation; live it up with a burger!" Corvette Diner is located at 3926 Fifth Ave., Hillcrest area. For more information call 619-542-1476.
Casa De Bandini feeds the addiction of traditional Mexican-cuisine lovers. Located in touristy Old Town State Historic Park, this 1829 restored adobe hacienda has a festive courtyard for outdoor dining. Families enjoy listening to the strolling mariachis, while dining on Mexican and fish specialties. The grande margaritas are huge! For more information call 619-297-8211.
At the Paradise Point Resort, kids can go to Kids Kamp in the morning or play a round of golf at the 18-hole putting green. After lunch they can have their hair wrapped in colorful string by a lagoon pool and then sail around Mission Bay in a rented sailboat. Before dinner, families can explore the 44-acre tropical resort on a quad bike. There is so much to do at the Paradise Pointe Resort. At night the resort brings a big screen to the main pool, pops up some popcorn and shows family movies. Families sit in lounge chairs or swim during the warm summer evenings while watching Shrek or The Jungle book
