If You're Ever In Augsburg, Germany...
By Dawn Schmer
Augsburg is a 2,000-year-old city about 40 minutes from Munich, and there are many fascinating museums, parks and other attractions. It is very close to Schloss Neuschwantstein, one of King Ludwig's fairy tale castles, and the one from which the Cinderella castle at Disney world was derived. The "Romantic Road" runs alongside Augsburg and it is rich in history as well. Roman legions set up camp over 2,000 years ago and named this city after Caesar Augustus. Many artifacts still remain. Much of the city was rebuilt after being bombed in WWII, but it retains much of its original beauty and charm.
At Christmastime, the Rathausplatz is filled with booths for the "Christkindlesmarkt" where vendors sell everything from creche figures beautifully carved from wood to steak sandwiches and bratwurst. Every evening at 6 p.m., angels appear at the windows of the Rathaus and sing carols. It truly is a marvelous sight to behold.
It's one of my favorite places in the world to go any time or season. Surrounded by green hills, dense pine forests, lakes and rivers, yet also having the convenience of trains, buses and great shopping, it truly is a wonderful place to visit.
