Tropical Family Fun
The Starfish Resort in Jamaica
By Belinda Clarke
About 100 feet from the beach into the water is a fairly large tropical "island" with lounge chairs, hammocks and shaded palm huts if you are looking for a more private place to catch some sun. For the more adventurous, fitness classes, a rock climbing wall and full-size circus training facility (with harnesses, safety nets, trapezes and a certified trainer) are also offered.
For a real escape and some additional pampering, guests can reserve time at the resort spa (not included in the package) for luxurious skin and body treatments such as massages, facials, seaweed treatments, body scrubs manicures and pedicures.
At night, there is also plenty to do. Babysitters cost just $5 an hour, so it's worth it to enjoy a late dinner without the kids and enjoy the nightly live entertainment. There's a poolside stage that offers nightly Jamaican concerts and for the party-hearty, a disco that stays open until the last guest leaves. Another option is relaxing with a tropical drink at the lobby bar or on your own hotel room balcony.
Because Starfish is all-inclusive, Jamaican beer and your choice of tropical beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are, of course, free, as is the food, which is fresh and very good.
Guests may dine in the main dining room buffet-style, which for breakfast, lunch and dinner offers dozens of hot and cold options including fish, pasta, fresh fruit and salad bar and made-to-order sandwiches, omelets and smoothies. You can also dine poolside for lunch at the Beach Grill which offers grilled hot dogs, chicken, hamburgers, tuna melts and, of course, french fries. And for snackers, there's also nachos and popcorn whenever you want, again, all at no charge.
