Art with a Purpose
Chicago's Global Warming Globes By Charlene Torkelson
Were the cows successful? It is estimated that these statues had a $200 million impact on the economy of Chicago. And the sale of more than half of these statues at the end of the exhibit donated 100 percent of the sale profits to local Chicago charities. The success of the Chicago cows encouraged the use of cows in New York City as well.
These displays not only promote tourism for these cities but join the artist community with local businesses to raise money – and in the case of the globes, awareness – for worthwhile projects. It's a community effort for all involved. Although some of the sponsors choose to keep their statue for further display, the statues that are sold bring big bucks not only at the auction after the exhibit closes, but for years to come as collector's items. Local Chicago businesses continue to cash in on "Cows on Parade" by selling small figurine replicas of the statues featured in the exhibit. It's the idea that keeps on giving back to the community.
Hopefully, the "Cool Globes" exhibit not only will give back to the community financially, but will give back to the entire world with a strong message on global warming and the steps we can all take to ensure our earth remains environmentally sound for future generations.
