At Pier 39 there are fruit vendors, hot donuts fresh out of the grease, countless fast food hops and the charm of barking seal lions in the distance. It is a hub of music and activity with local performers on every corner.

Chinatown

Visiting San Francisco and not touring Chinatown would be a travesty. The 24-square block area, which contains 20,000 Chinese residents, is the most colorful zone in the city. Wanting the most informative tour available, we booked a tour with Wok Wiz. Our tour guide grew up in Chinatown and was privy to all the history and folklore, which she shared with our touring group in generous proportions.

On the morning we strolled through this ethnic treasury we were treated to authentic Chinese melodies that floated out from the doorways of shops. We watched a local artisan create a lotus painting and sampled tea at a specialty shop.

We navigated our way through the odoriferous marketplace with our tour guide's help. "In the Chinese markets you can find anything to cure a health problem," she said. "That is why there are many live frogs for sale. Sometimes they are taken home and put straight into soup to cure an ailment." Without our guide we would not have seen all this colorful sector had to offer. This tour is a must for any traveler.
