Bed & Breakfast Offers Fine Dining, Sweets and More

Located in Brownstown in southern Indiana's Jackson County, the Bittersweet Bed & Breakfast offers an evening of fine dining at the Bittersweet's Chateau Cafe, which features the award-winning cuisine of Executive Chef Ed Miller.

With more than 20 years' experience, Miller is from Columbus, Ind., where he started the restaurant Smith's Row. Although the cafe offers a set menu, owner Doris Rightler says Miller is open to suggestions from customers, and often uses their suggestions for choosing the nightly specials.

Standard menu items include an eight-ounce charbroiled filet mignon, an "Applewood Smoked Pork Loin Chop" served with caramelized apples and the "Cog au Vin Champignons," a free range roasted chicken breast, braised then roasted in its own juices and reduced in a red wine sauce with mushrooms.

Appetizers include a sausage and mushroom strudel and "Ruby Port Roasted Garlic Quail." In addition to the Cafe's selection of desserts, the Bittersweet's Sweet Shop features international pastries such as tortes, cannolis and more.

The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday and reservations are required for the 5 and 7 p.m. seating.

Bittersweet's accommodations include four rooms and two suites, each decorated with furnishings from around the world. Prices range from $89 to $159 per night and include a full breakfast.

Upscale Restaurant Features Homegrown Cooking

Couples who drive to Milltown, located off State Road 64 in southern Indiana, will find themselves at the home of the Blue River Cafe.

The Cafe opened in 1989 in the former Knights of Pythias lodge building, which was built around 1890. Ric Archiald, who had no previous restaurant experience, rented the simple wood-frame building from the Knights of Pythias, and opened the restaurant after observing a lack of upscale dining establishments in the area.
