Palm Beach
A Romantic Florida Rendezvous
By Kendeyl Johansen
After lunch Lars and I strolled through several Atlantic Avenue boutiques before arriving at pristine Delray Beach. We rented a romantic double deck-lounger and enjoyed several hours of serious sun worshiping.
Our evening kicked-off with a "Palm Beach Now & Then" Tour by Palm Beach Water Taxi. Lars and I enjoyed our narrated insider peek into celebrity lifestyles as we cruised past mega-yachts (yours for a mere $23 million dollars) and the opulent mansions of Drew Barrymore, Rush Limbaugh and other celebrities (one "house" featured a two-story walk-in closet with spiral staircase and another boasted an underground 14-car garage). Lars and I held hands as the sun dipped behind neon-tinged clouds, joking we were glad we only had four bedrooms to clean instead of 29.
After disembarking from the boat, we drove to Morton's steakhouse (West Palm Beach) for my birthday dinner. Just thinking about Morton's makes my mouth water. I've savored the revered steakhouse's cuisine in Chicago, Las Vegas and New York, but could Morton's Palm Beach possibly live up to my inflated expectations?
Happily, it did! My prime rib was tender enough to make my knife superfluous, and as usual, I devoured every bite of my delicious Hot Upside-Down Apple Pie. To create a "just-the-two-of-us feeling" ask for a romantic candle-lit table in the corner.
The next morning, Lars and sampled Palm Beach's public beach, located at the bottom of famed Worth Avenue. This beach is easy to find – just look for the small break among endless miles of 10-foot-tall privacy hedges. Obviously the rich and famous didn't want to see us as much as we wanted to see them!
When visiting this beach don't forget to bring quarters for the parking meters – unless you want to visit Chanel or Tiffany & Co. for change. Picture this beach as small, exclusive and quiet, without rowdy beach volleyball games, nearby souvenir vendors or fast food outlets.
