Cancun
Mexico's Ecological Playground
By Donna Smith
The Sheraton Cancun Resort & Towers offers families a multitude of activities. With two swimming pools, four restaurants and bars, four lighted tennis courts, basketball, a gym, miniature golf and playground, children and parents will have plenty to do – or not to do! The Sheraton is the only hotel with an authentic, 1,000-year-old Mayan temple. Plan to spend a while and be sure to bring a camera – the view at the top of the ruins is magnificent!
A Ritz-Carlton in any location defines luxury, but place it on a white-sand beach in Cancun and it becomes even more so. The Ritz-Carlton Cancun is located on 7.5 acres and has 1,200 square feet of sparkling beachfront. The tiled roofs, wrought-iron railings, fountains and courtyards reflect Mexico's Spanish heritage and are truly breathtaking. The hotel has a KidsCamp that offers full-day and half-day activities for children 4 to 12, including lunch, so families are welcome and taken care of. Other family-oriented activities include miniature golf, jungle cruises and waterparks. For more information visit www.ritzcarlton.com.
The breakfast buffet at The Beach Palace Resort is not to be missed! Traditional items – eggs, omelet bar, toast, bagels, bacon, sausage, yogurt, fresh fruit, etc. – can be found alongside Mexican fare such as spicy bean and sausage soup, seasoned chicken on homemade corn shells, spicy chunks of chorizo and fried plantains, to name just a few. The view from the restaurant is spectacular and the music played will take you back in time. Sip freshly-squeezed orange, tangerine, cantaloupe or watermelon juice or Mexican hot chocolate while Olivia Newton John pleads, "Don't Play B-17" or while KC shakes his booty.
