Cancun
Mexico's Ecological Playground
By Donna Smith
While the rivers are unforgettable, what children will be talking about for weeks afterward is swimming and interacting with dolphins. The dolphin programs are not included in the park's entrance fee, but are well worth the extra money. With the help of park staff, children and adults can swim, interact and get to know these much-loved mammals. Xcaret also boasts one of the most successful dolphin reproduction programs in the world – the first dolphin born in captivity in Mexico was born at the park.
The fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down at Xcaret! The spectacular night show will captivate children as they watch an epic celebration with amazing costumes, music, lights and magic. Adults will fall in love with the story, and children will be awed by more than 200 performers in elaborate costumes that sing, dance and even play an ancient game using a ball of fire. The colorful traditions of Mexico shine through in this awesome performance. For more information visit www.XcaretCancun.com.
Another eco-treasure is Tres Rios. This beautiful eco-park provides a great balance of sporty and leisure activities. Families looking for relaxation can ride horses along the water's edge; claim a hammock, close their eyes and listen to the surf; float or snorkel down a jungle river or at a coral reef; and paddle a kayak down the river into the ocean. After rejuvenating, families can jump into a speedboat, hop on a bicycle or visit the Kid's Club where kids can splash, slide and swim. Or participate in Tres Rio's newest attraction, Paintball!
A unique attraction at Tres Rios is Sensorama. This "senso-perceptual" trip through the jungle will awaken the senses. Participants are blindfolded and guided to an experience they will not soon forget. Trust is important and will be tested as you explore nature through listening, feeling, moving and smelling. Families can reflect by a tranquil pond at the end about what the experience meant to them. For more information visit www.tres-rios.com.
