Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin
The Midwest's Family Playground
By Elisa Ast All
Even the indoor water playground feels calm. Called Blizzard Bay, this water activity center is ideally set up for children and adults. Adults can enjoy a pool without toys and gizmos, and kids can climb to the top of the Ice Castle, slide down an open flume and carry on a battle at the Snow Fort with water weapons and aqua ammunition. Small children can slide down the soft foam slide from the top of the igloo and play with floatable characters, such as the polar bear Shivers, the penguin Quivers and Mr. Snowman. They can hop aboard a floating snowmobile or grab a piece of floatable foam ice. Water levels vary from 2 to 18 inches. Perfect for tots!
Outdoors at Polar Island, kids splash in and around Fort Frosty, Crystal Ice Castle, Glacial Mountain, Frostbite Falls and Ice Cavers, all complete with geysers, waterslides, dripping icicles, bubbling fountains and gleaming snowdrifts. Adults can relax in the whirlpool built into a cave.
The Wintergreen Resort also includes a children's game and redemption center, a glassed-in sports bar overlooking the indoor water park and an exercise and fitness center. The Wintergreen Grille, a full-service restaurant, offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and room service.
A "Kids Club" free membership gives children younger than 10 a bag of goodies and coupons for activities at the resort as well as area attractions. Children younger than 18 stay free in their parents' or grandparents' suite. Contact them at 800-648-4765 or www.wintergreen-resort.com.
If you want something exotic, Kalahari could be the place. This African-themed resort has an indoor and outdoor water park, nice rooms including family suites, fine dining, great coffee and more entertainment especially geared toward families. The Kalahari Resort is located at 1305 Kalahari Drive, Wisconsin Dells. Contact them at 877-253-5466 or www.kalahariresort.com.
