Totally Truckee
A Charming California City Nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains
By Shelly Hemig
Many of you have heard stories about the tribulations of the doomed Donner Party. To get the whole story, your best bet is to visit the Emigrant Trail Museum, located inside the Donner Memorial State Park. As much Donner memorabilia as they have, the museum has other exhibits on display as well.
The history of Truckee doesn't start and end with the Donner Party. The area is rich in Native American, pioneer, railroad and gold rush history. If you drive into Old Town Truckee, along Commercial Row (actually a stretch of Donner Pass Road), you will find historic buildings from the town's past, as well as new construction built in the old style to preserve the ambiance of downtown.
A self-guided walking tour is a fun look at the past, from the "Rocking Stone" to the 1869 Depot Building. You can get a map at the Visitor Center in the railroad station downtown. While you're downtown, don't forget to visit the Old Truckee Jail on Jibboom Street, which Truckee-Donner Historical Society volunteers open for tours during summer weekends.
Also, check out the shops downtown clothes, kitchenware, antiques a little something for everyone. Or partake of the many culinary offerings, from the old-style soda fountain to the pub and restaurant.
Looking for a bargain? Truckee's got you covered there as well, with the Tahoe-Truckee Factory Stores. Other small shopping centers in town offer bookstores, bike and ski shops and other restaurant selections. One even houses the Sierra Nevada Childrenšs Museum.
Accommodations range from house and condo rentals to motels to campgrounds. It all depends on your budget and vacation needs.
Truckee is really so much more than a place to refuel your car or your body. It's a place to refresh your mind and your spirit. It's a final destination in and of itself.
