Of course that's not too exciting for the rest of the family – 20-year-olds and 13-year-olds don't usually need renewal. Thankfully, if there was ever a vacation destination with something for everyone, this is it. Now, the availability of all of these activities could make this sound like a busy place. But remember, I only mention all of the following for the benefit of those little creatures – your kids. (Or for those of you who have energy to burn. I understand there are some folks like that! The rest of you meet me on the porch for a glass of wine at sunset.)

Kid-friendly Activities

On the ocean side, there are the smooth beaches for sandcastle building and shelling, ocean swimming for body surfers and strong swimmers, and pools for other swimmers. On the sound side there's world class windsurfing at Canadian Hole, sailing and kayaking. You'll find rental and lessons for almost any water sport equipment you can imagine.

The candy-cane-striped Lighthouse at Cape Hatteras was in the news a few years ago. It was relocated 2,600 feet back from the ocean, which threatened to undermine it. Today it's not only back in service, but welcomes you to climb to its top for a glorious view of ocean and island.

The National Park Service offers tours of the site and a wide variety of nature oriented classes for all ages during the summer months
