South Carolina's
Seabrook Island
Magic Happens Near and in Charleston
By Pamela Allen
"Every summer I go to our beach house and ride my pony, Peanut," my 6-year-old daughter, Lily, says. I see the doubtful looks her friend's older sisters exchange. I can't help but secretly share Lily's fantasy.
Our annual trips to the Seabrook Island are truly the stuff of dreams. The magic begins when we turn onto Bohicket Road, a winding drive bordered by towering live oaks draped with moss. The resort is about 30 minutes from Charleston, S.C., a secluded island committed to preserving its unique ecosystem.
Seabrook Island is surrounded by wide, dune-lined beaches. Swimming, boogie boarding, crabbing and fishing are all available depending on which beach you choose. There's also a pool complex where kids' activities such as aqua-golf, tie-dying and ice cream socials are featured in the afternoon. Somehow we seem to spend part of every day in the water, even if it's an after dinner swim and some amateur star-gazing over the ocean.
A pony ride at the Equestrian Center is the highlight of every visit we make to the island. Peanut, a small, gentle pony, is Lily's favorite. More expert riders can take advantage of the guided trail rides or even go riding on the beach.
Many visitors prefer to get around on wheels. Biking is probably the preferred mode of transportation. There are 2,200 acres of maritime forest and beautiful salt marshes to explore.
