Petit Jean State Park
Meet Mother Nature in Arkansas
By Donna Smith
Anderson suggests that families with small children bring a stroller with them to the park. "It makes getting around in the park easier, as well as viewing some of the overlooks," she says. "If you have small children and are planning on doing significant hiking, the backpacks you can carry the children in seem to be very popular on our trails. For the shorter trails, the leash-type harness things you can get are a good way to keep a hold of your child while still letting them explore some on their own."
Other nearby activities include horseback riding, the Museum of Automobiles, a public swimming pool, fishing boat and paddleboat rentals, a country store, tennis courts, an airport (for daytime flying only), volleyball, playgrounds and picnic areas. Some are privately owned and do require a fee.
My family's favorite activity was the paddleboats. They loved peddling their boats around the lake, dodging the water lilies that float peacefully along the edge. Afterwards, we bought cane poles and worms and fished off the wooden pier. On our last visit, there was an old-fashioned Swap Meet outside of the Museum of Automobiles. We enjoyed looking through other people's treasures while sipping on freshly squeezed lemonade.
Mather Lodge is the main house at the park and overlooks the Arkansas River Valley. The beautiful stone and log building is fully modernized on the inside, and has 24 guestrooms, a gift shop and a full-service restaurant. Scattered throughout the surrounding woods are over 30 cabins, 20 of which offer full housekeeping. Every cabin has a fireplace and kitchen and is heated and air-conditioned for your comfort.
