Petit Jean State Park
Meet Mother Nature in Arkansas
By Donna Smith
In fall, the leaves begin to change, making the canyon and scenic overlooks come alive with a sea of reds, yellows, oranges and the ever present greens. "Fall is a busy time of the year, particularly on the weekends," says Anderson. "Peak fall foliage is usually the last week of October or the first week of November. In the fall, there will be programs on the weekends. Annually (usually on the Saturday before Halloween) we host a huge Halloween party, complete with carnival games and a spook house. On Thanksgiving weekend the mountain goes back in time to pre-1840s at our Mountain Man Rendezvous. The public is invited to come experience a mountain man encampment."
Winter, while definitely not the busiest of all seasons, has some unique features all its own. "Views in the park stretch much farther since there are no leaves hindering your view," says Anderson. "We have some days that are wonderful to be outside, along with the days when it just feels good to curl up in front of the fire. Mather Lodge does have a fireplace just for that purpose." Special events in winter include a Christmastime Open House, New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance, Eagle Awareness Weekend and Hikes Hearts and Hugs Weekend for Valentine's Day.
Anderson suggests picking up a program schedule upon arrival to see what events are planned. "Regardless of the age of the children, we will typically have some events that will be just what you are looking for," she says. "We do have a playground, centrally located in the park, if the kids simply need to get rid of some energy."
