Maui with Kids
Making the Most of Your Hawaiian Vacation
By Amy Carey
What might be the most helpful when traveling to Maui with young children? More adults! "We were there with five adults," says Alexis Neely, a mother from Redondo Beach, Calif., who vacationed with her 3-year-old daughter, parents, sister and husband. "So lack of adults was not an issue. The vacation would have been much less enjoyable without all that help."
Surely not everyone can bring their whole family along on every trip (or might not want to), so consider partnering with another couple who has children. Curly hopes that next time she travels to the islands, "We would ... try to travel with another family with kids," she says. "The kids could entertain each other, and the parents could switch off and give each other some free time."
Finally, if you're free to visit Maui any time of the year, Doppelmayer suggests you visit in May or June. "The humidity is not too high, temperatures are pleasant and the waves on the southern and western shores are generally not yet monstrous (which means your kids can go near the water)," she says.
Keli'i Brown, public relations and promotions director for the Maui Visitors Bureau, says, "Popular times are spring break and summer break. The big secret is the first two weeks of December. The resorts and activities are not as busy."
No matter when you decide to visit Maui or where on the island to stay, go with flexible expectations, plenty of patience and expect to create some great memories.
