Funny Business in Chicago
Mixing Business Travel with Leisure Time in Chicago
By Suzy Feine
A visit to the Shedd Aquarium puts you in touch with aquatic and land ecosystems from around the world. Alaska sea otters, Beluga whales, dolphins and penguins are just some of the animals you can witness thriving in their pseudo-natural environments.
Wishbone Restaurant, 1001 West Washington Blvd.
Self-dubbed "southern reconstruction cooking," Wishbone restaurant successfully re-creates southern home cooking with an updated flair, using fresh and healthy ingredients.
What began as a 25-seat restaurant has expanded to two locations serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. With unique breakfast specials such as spicy crab cakes and eggs, shrimp and grits, and blackened catfish, Wishbone draws families and local business crowds alike.
Its kid-friendly environment and attitude is a welcome change – they vow never to seat you right next to the kitchen just because you walk in with children. Colorful artwork of flying eggs and bedecked cows adorn the walls, entertaining your kids while they wait for their frog toast or porky biscuit.
Benihana, 166 East Superior Street
Traditional Japanese cuisine is probably not at the top of your children's list of favorite foods. But when that food is prepared right at your table by performing chefs, kids are eager to give it a try.
Benihana is famous for the art of teppanyaki-style cooking, a combination of presentation and knife skills. Menu items are prepared on a large table-top grill called a "teppan" while diners sit within inches of the grill, watching in amazement.
Menu items include a variety of meat and seafood dishes, fresh sushi and other Japanese favorites. The children's menu offers smaller versions, accompanied by a special dessert. Be sure to ask for their kid-friendly chopsticks so your children can enjoy their traditional Japanese meal the traditional Japanese way.
