From Sheep to Potatoes
A Virtual Tour of Fall Festivals Around the Country By Margaret Littman
Today's visitors get much of the same: living history demonstrations, musical entertainment, square dancers, cloggers, children's games, stagecoach rides and a bake sale. The adult admission includes, of course, a free baked potato with toppings. The Potato Day Festival is held at Centennial Village Museum.
The festival is on September 11, 2004, in Greeley, Colo. Visit www.greeleymuseums.com or call 970-350-9220 for specifics.
Go Fly a Kite
Mary Poppins this isn't. For 18 years, professional kite flyers have entertained onlookers with their amazing stunts. This year's Outer Banks Stunt Kite Competition and Festival will be a kite carnival incorporating activities to involve spectators and families more. Kite building, beginner's workshops, indoor kite flying and other obscure events on a string will be held at Jockey's Ridge State Park. The festival runs September 18 and 19, 2004, in Nags Head, N.C. Call 877-FLY-THIS or log on to www.kittyhawk.com.
Stir It Up
What could be more old-fashioned than an Apple Butter Stirrin' Festival, complete with hog calling, a kids pumpkin decorating event, corn husking and a spelling bee, not to mention a juried craft show and appearances by Johnny Appleseed? Nothing. Food booths and a pie-baking contest will give you something on which to spread that butter. The apple butter event will be held at Historic Roscoe Village, a restored 19th-century living history community depicting life in Ohio's Canal Era. The festival runs October 15 to 17, 2004, in Coshocton, Ohio. Call 740-622-9310, 800-877-1830 or visit the Roscoe Village Web site.
