Away for the Holidays
Fun Places to Make Family Memories
By Elisa Ast All
While being home for the holidays may be wonderful, traveling can be amazing, too. From sleigh rides and stunning light displays to delicious feasts and memorable shows, we've found destinations that may make you want to be away for the holidays – at least this year.
Hershey, Pa., is a very sweet place to visit anytime, but more so during the holiday season. Families enjoy driving through Hershey Park's Hershey Sweet Lights – A Holiday Drive-Thru Spectacular. The drive of more than 2 miles through wooded winter trails features one million glowing Christmas lights, which illuminate 600 animated scenes. Located in the woods behind The Hotel Hershey, nine themed areas, including the traditional 12 Days of Christmas and a nostalgic Victorian Winter Village, delight children and adults alike. A radio broadcast with holiday tunes adds to the enjoyment.
Another area celebration is A Dickens of a Christmas held in Wellsboro, Pa. This Victorian celebration and street festival follows the classic theme of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Eat roasted peanuts, hot apple dumplings, gingerbread cookies, hand-made chocolates, homemade soups and other Victorian treats as you sip on hot cider. Street musicians and carolers dressed for the period will serenade you along the tree-lined, gas-lit Main Street.

The holiday sights, sounds and uplifting spirits you may remember from childhood will be on display at the Grand Geneva Resort's annual Christmas in the Country celebration. The celebration brings thousands of area residents and visitors to the resort to enjoy holiday lights, musical theater, festive food and family fun. More than half a million lights illuminate the sky and form dramatic displays both inside the resort as well as outside across its 1,300 rolling acres.
