Family Fun in the Heart of Texas

We had dinner at the hotel's Austin Grill. The casual, but elegant, atmosphere makes it a perfect choice for families with children. The menu featured Southwestern foods with a modern twist. After agonizing over the selections, the waitress helped by recommending the Grilled Swordfish. Served with a pineapple avocado butter sauce, lobster coconut risotto and grilled baby vegetables, it was out of this world. Other options included a 12-ounce Caribbean "jerk" grilled ribeye, bacon wrapped pork tenderloin, chicken fried steak and horseradish-crusted salmon. Each came with a unique side dish, such as jalapeño sweet corn flan, smoked gouda mashed potatoes or a warm andouille couscous salad. A kid's menu is available.

The Hill Country Dining Room offered a more romantic dining experience, and Jim Bob's, a cozy sports bar, was the perfect spot for a game of pool and a plate of nachos.

Here, the Barton Creek Resort shares its recipe for Lobster Coconut Risotto.

Want some time for yourself? Plan to have a treatment at the Spa at Barton Creek. How does a rainforest body rinse sound? Or maybe a massage, manicure, body wrap, facial or aromatherapy? The spa also offers a side-by-side classic Swedish massage if you want to get away as a couple or with a friend. And be sure to check out their Texas-themed signature products.

If you want to keep your little ones occupied for a while, the resort offers the Kid's Club for kids 6 months to 8 years for a nominal charge. "This is ideal when parents want to play golf, tennis, workout, have dinner and/or have spa appointments," says Jayme Clark, activities coordinator for Kid's Club. Because the club keeps one counselor – all CPR certified – per five children, it is important to call ahead for a reservation. "We have gone to great links to include all ages," Clark says. "We have recreational activities during the summer and winter holidays for children that include water balloon toss, s'mores, face painting, hair wraps, crafts, finger painting, etc. We also have programs designed for children interested in golf, tennis and fitness. Even our spa has treatments designed for children."
