A Slice of Heaven
Club Med Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
By Brad Keywell
After discussing the activities, excursions, meals and kids club, you might be thinking that is the entertainment. But when the sun goes down at Club Med, the G.O.s go from being counselors and activity supervisors to being the entertainers that they all seem to aspire to be. Each night at 8:15 p.m. there is a kids show, ranging from magicians, a clown show, a game show and a lip-sync contest, each of which ensures that every kid is a winner and each of which keeps the adults laughing.
Following the kids show each night there is a fully-choreographed, elaborate production at 9:30 p.m. in the theater (a full theater with professional stage which seats all of the guests), and one show outdid the next. While 9:30 was a bit late for the kids, often the many friends our kids made were themselves going to the show, so we had no choice but to take them.
The grand finale was on Friday night, when a one-and-a-half-hour production of Moulin Rouge (the movie), complete with 15 well-choreographed numbers, amazed all of us. The dancing was professional caliber, and the overall production was extremely impressive.
We were impressed that no matter what we were doig, there seemed to be a photographer not far away, available to snap pictures of our kids or our entire family. We were also offered the opportunity to take family pictures with a professional photographer, which we gladly accepted. The beauty of all of this is that the quality of the photography was top notch, and you only pay for what you like. The cost per picture was $10 for a 5x7 (more for larger pictures), which is well worth it considering that a family sit-down photo session with a professional photographer in Chicago can run well over $500 (often resulting in only mediocre pictures).
