The New School Calendar Loophole

Over the past few years, many school districts, specifically those on the southern side of the Mason-Dixon line, have passed laws prohibiting schools from starting any earlier than the last week of August in order to lengthen the tourism season in these areas. This change has given many families three to four more weeks of vacation each year. And for parents, that might translate to three to four more weeks of, "What are we going to do with the kids?!?" HomeAway presents you with a great answer: Take advantage of the school calendar loophole.

"While the schools have extended their summer breaks, many vacation rental home published rates still mimic the older school calendar summer dates when kids went back to school in early August," Karpinski says. "That means many property owners still reduce their published rates by 20 to 30 percent in August because they're still used to August being a slow rental month. These areas include locations such as North Carolina, most of Florida, Tennessee, and the beaches of Alabama, and desert locations in New Mexico, Nevada and Utah. And you don't have to be a vacation expert to find a good time in at least one of these areas!"
