Let's Make a (Vacation) Deal
6 Ways You Can Squeeze in a Great (and Cheap!) Vacation Before It's Too Late
Karpinski says we're getting ready to transition from the expensive "peak" travel season to the inexpensive season, when many vacation rental properties offer reduced rates of 10 to 30 percent. And to benefit all of the last-minute vacationers, HomeAway's network of vacation rentals includes more than 200,000 properties all over the world. With just a little bit of digging you can find a great vacation deal, and we're not talking some cheap motel several blocks from the beach. We're talking top-of-the-line rental properties where you'll have all of the comforts of home. Karpinski offers some tips to help you out:
Obviously, if you're looking to hone your slalom skills, this isn't the best time of the year to visit ski resort towns. But if it's a great vacation deal (rates are usually about 25 percent less) you're looking for, the off season is the time to go. Despite the lack of perfect skiing conditions, there are still a number of ways to enjoy the great outdoors in these areas.
"The ski resorts in Colorado, Utah, Stowe Mountain in Vermont or Hunter Mountain in New York (just to name a few) are not only beautiful locations, but the areas offer something for everyone to enjoy," Karpinski says. "You can soak up some cool mountain air as you take to the fabulous trails in these areas either on foot, on horseback or on a mountain bike. Also, because these towns thrive on the money they receive from tourism, they work hard to keep bringing vacationers in by holding cultural arts and crafts festivals during the summer months that are fun for the whole family."
