Opening the Eyes and Minds of Children
The Children's Museum of Richmond
By Carma Haley Shoemaker
The Children's Museum of Richmond states their mission as "to enrich the lives of children, youth, families and those who care for them by providing interactive educational experiences that stimulate discovery, learning and understanding about themselves and the world around them." What better way to encourage a child's confidence, ability and enthusiasm than offer a place where children are encouraged to learn by having fun. Designed with the thought that "creative play translates into active learning," children ages 6 months to 12 years will find themselves both entertained and educated.
The museum offers programs for family visits, elementary school outings and daycare provider field trips. With various areas, attractions and exhibits, the Children's Museum of Richmond has found the perfect combination of fun and learning for children of all ages.
Just a few of the areas offered are the "Celebration Center," the "Grandis Gallery," the "How It Works" area, "Art Studio," "Feeling Good Neighborhood," "Our Great Outdoors" area and the "Little Children's Museum of Richmond." Each area has its own theme, as well as its own lessons to be learned while playing, feeling and experimenting the day away.
Space offered by the museum may be rented privately for birthdays, parties, groups or organizations. The area is close to the main entrance, which allows for children to easily find the way back to their group. The area can be rented, decorated and laid out in any style. Have a birthday party for a young child and then allow the guests to explore the museum. Celebration Center is a great place to offer a party that won't soon be forgotten.
