Experiencing Hawaii, Family Style

The oceanfront Wailea Marriott recently underwent a $25 million renovation, and it shows. The casual, open-air dining, big rooms with island d袯r (including mini-fridge, robes and an in-room coffee maker) and pools with slides and an aquatic "jungle gym" are just the things for active families.
Perhaps the most memorable thing about the hotel is the spacious balconies, where you can be soothed to nap by a wave serenade. But kids might say finding shells, coral and pebble "treasures" on the beach is the best. There's also a supervised children's program if you – or the kids – need a break.

While in Maui, be sure to take a ride on the Sugar Cane Train, "an open-air coach whose nostalgic charm recalls the days of old Hawaii." The Sugar Cane Train travels between Maui's Ka'anapali and Lahaina areas, providing a relaxing quick trip with spectacular views of the ocean and an entertaining commentary on the history of the area.
It's just not Hawaii without enjoying a luau. It's magical to see kids' eyes light up at the sight of the Polynesian fire dancers. You'll also enjoy hula exhibitions and a lavish all-you-can-eat buffet featuring tropical fare to tempt even the pickiest little ones. Not to be missed are roasted Kalua pig, fresh island pineapple and coconut and, of course, poi, a Hawaiian delicacy made from taro.
The Maui Ocean Center is a must-see. Kids can learn about green sea turtles, marvel at the grace of sharks and stingrays and even gently touch sea cucumbers and sea stars.
For an adventure of gigantic proportions, go whale-watching with Pacific Whale Foundation Eco-Adventures. This company donates all profits from turs to saving whales, dolphins and other marine-life, and the knowledgeable staff (all certified marine naturalists) encourage questions and patiently answer all inquiries.
