Expecting a Spa Experience
Why Are Moms-to-be Heading to the Spa?
By Pamela Allen
The idea that pregnancy is an illness is long gone. In fact, 30 minutes every day of moderate physical activity is not just considered safe, it is believed to be beneficial for most pregnant women. The most important step is to check with your doctor before starting or resuming your exercise program.
Kelly Bowling, a fitness instructor at The Sanctuary Hotel's fitness center on Kiawah Island, near Charleston, S.C., suggests that you go back to your regular fitness routine but perhaps take it down a notch. "You might want to try yoga, which provides many benefits throughout pregnancy and delivery such as breathing control, strength training and flexibility," she says.
Additionally, Bowling stresses that stomach compressions should be avoided after the third trimester, if not before, as directed by your doctor. " This means traditional Pilates is out!" she says. "I highly reccomend working with an experienced prenatal yoga instructor, as this will be beneficial throughout your pregnancy, during labor and then continue with postnatal yoga to ease back into a fitness plan post baby." And always check with your doctor before trying any exercise during pregnancy.
Spas help you enjoy your pregnancy and enhance your sense of well-being. A massage is a great way to ease the stress of the changes to your body and restore tranquilly. Massage can also relieve many of the aches and pains of pregnancy such as backaches, leg cramps, a stiff neck and swollen ankles and feet. It can also help your body eliminate waste products through the lymphatic andcirculatory systems, which help you combat fatigue and restore energy. Finally, massage can help you tone loose muscles and increase flexibility.
