Hilton Head Island
3 Reasons You'll Love This Island off the Coast of South Carolina
By Shel Franco
Clark seems to agree. "We see lots of extended families and friends taking advantage of the many beach house rental options on the island," she says. "We have some really great homes on the ocean, some up to eight bedrooms, which are really popular – need to rent them far in advance. Many times families find their favorite resort area and stick with it year after year."
That's not to say hotels don't offer unique benefits of their own. "The hotels also have really strong kid programs for every age group, which can give Mom and Dad some time to themselves too," Clark says.
Of course, where you stay is no more important than what you can do when you get there. Hilton Head Island is so much more than a beach. "For the under 5 group there's horseback riding, biking on a tandem built for two with the back bike built for a wee one and about a million other activities," Clark says. "Dolphin tours are always popular, especially some of the smaller boats that seat eight to 10 where you can get up close and personal with the dolphins. Kids as young as 5 can also kayak. For school age, preteens and teens, there's also a lot to discover. Biking on our beaches, junior golf lessons, parasailing, wave runners, tennis."
The bottom line is that a Hilton Head Island vacation is whatever you want it to be.
"Interestingly, as vacation time is shrinking more and more for Americans, with extended weekend getaways being the norm for so many, the weeklong family vacation is alive and well on Hilton Head Island," Clark says. "Our average length of stay for visitors is six days. You can almost tell the difference in those families who have just arrived and those that have been here for a few days. The stress levels are way down and the relaxation levels are high ... People will often say that something happens when you cross those bridges ... you sort of leave it all behind."
