Hilton Head Island
3 Reasons You'll Love This Island off the Coast of South Carolina
By Shel Franco
Because of its semi-tropical location, HHI enjoys pleasant temperatures and sunshine all year long. Clark confirms what most vacationers assume: Summer is high season on the island with the average July low temperature being 74 degrees Fahrenheit and the average high being 89. "As an island we're fortunate to always have a nice coastal breeze," she says. Just don't let that welcoming summer weather stop you from visiting at other times of the year. "I think one of the best times to visit is in the spring," Clark says. "The island is in bloom, and [it's] a great getaway from a much chillier north."
FYI: The average low in April is 56, and the average high is 76. Clark adds that November, with an average high of 69, is still a comfortable temperature for many vacationers.
Whatever the vacation, where you'll stay plays a big part in the planning. From luxury beachfront homes to well-known hotel chains, this island offers a little bit of everything.
"Hilton Head Island has a large number of hotel rooms available, and they have almost double the number of home and villa rentals available," Clark says. "Villas and homes are very conducive to family travel ... a home away from home of sorts."
Finding your perfect "home away from home" is easy with the use of the Internet. Reserving rooms at major hotel names like Hilton, Holiday Inn, Marriott, and more is easy with their corporate Web sites. Tracking down the perfect private rental can be just as easy with sites like craigslist.org and homeaway.com.
Hotel or home: which is right for you? When you're traveling as a family, here's something to think about. "At HomeAway.com our research shows that the average cost per square foot of a hotel room is double that of a vacation rental home," says Eileen Buesing, director of public relations for homeaway.com. "Kitchens in vacation rentals save additional money and allow parents to easily cater to special dietary needs and children's often fickle taste buds. The additional space of a home also means avoiding sharing a room (and usually a bed) with small children which, frankly, is anything but relaxing."
