South Carolina's
Seabrook Island
Magic Happens Near and in Charleston
By Pamela Allen
The Waterfront Park that overlooks Charleston Harbor is one of the best places to take a break. There are bench-filled gardens and a fishing pier with porch-style swings. The swings are popular, but our patience has always paid off in a turn. On hot days the sculpture fountain beckons. After a morning of sight-seeing my daughter loves to run around and cool off.
Lunch usually takes us to Blossom or The Hominy Grill. Blossom is upscale but casual. Lily loves pizza and the ones at Blossom are thin, crispy and made in a wood-fired oven. The restaurant is also known for their seafood. Their oyster po'boy sandwiches are always on the top of my list.
Our other choice, The Hominy Grill, is a casual cafe known for its Southern specialties and inventive sandwiches. Their motto "grits are good" communicates the homey local feeling you get as soon as you walk in
the door. I like to come for lunch and get the vegetable plate. A popular Southern lunch, you can have five choices from an array that includes homemade applesauce, yams, cornbread and macaroni and cheese (hot sauce on the side). Lily likes to come for brunch and have the pancakes. Either way we try to save room for dessert. Our favorite is their chocolate pudding.
