South Carolina's
Seabrook Island
Magic Happens Near and in Charleston
By Pamela Allen
Tennis is another option. The "Munchkins" tennis clinic is a great opportunity for young kids to give the sport a try. More serious players can enroll in seasonal camps, private lessons or be "matched" with another player of the same skill level.
Our first off-island excursion usually takes us to the neighboring Kiawah Island Resort. The Heron Park Nature Center is a great place for kids. Lily loves the play area where they provide crayons and pictures of the animals to color. Morning dove, possum, rabbit, turtles and snakes can all be closely observed at the nature center.
A dry erase board keeps track of the wildlife sightings on the island. Naturalist Elyse Jenkins says that "kids love adding their sightings to the list. Bobcat, deer, lizards, alligators and snakes are all regularly seen on the island." If you want to learn more, there are a wide range of both classroom and outdoor nature programs available for the whole family, including children as young as 3.
Another fun outing is the Rosebank Farms Market on the Betsy Kerrison Parkway. We fill our bags with fresh sweet corn, heirloom tomatoes, peaches and melons. Local preserves, crab cakes and fresh baked pies also get my attention. Lily has her priorities. She heads straight for the barnyard at the back of the property. The menagerie of animals includes pigs, goats, bunnies and colorful, talking macaw.
