South Carolina's
Seabrook Island
Magic Happens Near and in Charleston
By Pamela Allen
We wind our way through wooded trails looking for wildlife. We've spotted a bobcat (not threatening to humans) and many, many deer. The signs along the marsh that warn us of alligators make Lily worried. She pulls her legs high up on our tandem bike. We've never seen a gator but it's good to know they're out there. One animal that we'd love to see, but continues to allude us, is the Loggerhead turtle that nests on the beach. Volunteer residents carefully monitor, track and count them.
When we need a break we head back to our villa (a two-bedroom condominium). Rental properties include everything from one-bedroom cottages to large private homes that can lodge extended families. The accommodations range from comfortable to luxurious and include views of the ocean, woods or golf course.
Renting a cottage is a great way to save on food costs. We make a stop at the local grocery store on our way from the airport. Even if we have an occasional lunch at the poolside grill, or some restaurant dinners, our savings over a week is substantial. Another advantage of not being at a hotel is having additional space. There's plenty of room for everyone to do their own thing, whether it's listen to music, curl up with a book or pull out a jigsaw puzzle.
When we're ready to head back out there are plenty of activities from which to choose. Rollerblades and the playground vie for our attention. Bigger groups might find basketball or sand volleyball fun.
Traditional resort amenities are also available. Seabrook Island has two championship golf courses. One course designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., winds through the forest. The other, designed by William Byrd, challenges you with its distracting views of the Atlantic Ocean.
