Boulder, Colorado

A Small-scale City
with Big-time Charm

At the time, we needed tickets – for timed entrances – to its special exhibit of modern art, the pieces of which were on loan from a couple with taste in art – shall we say – widely disparate from my own. But no matter, it's always interesting to visit a state's capital and see the buildings that house its governor and elected officials. These one can view from one of the museum's zig-zag-shaped balconies.

In fact, the museum's architecture is considered a work of art in its own right. From the outside, the building designed by famous architect Daniel Libeskind resembles jagged crystalline structures viewed under a powerful microscope.

The points and angles of Denver's Rockies inspired Libeskind to replicate that topography as the museum's skin. Fascinating to behold from the outside, the jutting structure seemed to greatly limit the spaces in which to stroll inside.

A February 2007 Wall Street Journal article called the DAM's Hamilton building, "...explosive, anti-rectangular, defiantly irrational..." and says this of one of its interior spaces:

"The black stairs keep narrowing and zigzagging back on themselves as they rise, and are sometimes pressed against tilted walls. Each broad landing foyer permits dizzying views up and down to the steeply sloped triangular ceilings and ceiling beams, wide punctured, non-vertical walls and strange shapes and strips of skylight."

And now I can say I've seen more of Denver than just its airport, one of United Airlines' main hubs.

As for Boulder, however, I can say I saw quite a lot, especially in the span of a mere long weekend. Would I return? I hope to, and I hope you're now inspired to give it a first go, too.

Exploring Boulder with Kids

Boulder's wide-open spaces, mild climate and love of the outdoors make way for many kid-friendly activities in this college town. Check out some below, should you be vacationing with kids in tow to this spot at the Rockies' foothills.

  • The Pearl Street Mall, listed above along with great shopping, nibbling and sipping venues, also is rife with plenty of easily accessed play areas for kids. There are areas set aside for kids to try their hands (and feet) at rock climbing and bouldering, as well as (in summer) a complex of little fountains, located outside the courthouse. Designed with kids in mind, water jets shoot straight out from the ground.
  • Also along Pearl Street is Color Me Mine, a popular spot where kids (and their parents, for that matter) can sneak in some down time and paint their own pottery. Not in town long? For a nominal fee, Color Me Mine will rush your item(s) through its kiln or, if you pay postage in advance, an employee will have it shipped to your home.
  • A great way to close out a busy day, an outdoor cinema is right next door to the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House. Learn more here.
  • Hikes and bike rides at kids' speeds and levels also are plentiful to Boulder. To get an initial list of many such offerings, check out REI's site here. It allows you to click on your destination city for PDFs about "Local Family Hikes" and "Local Family Bike Rides."
