Everything You Need to Know About Passports

Here's where you need to go to apply for your passport:

  • Normal Applications: You must appear in person (including children of any age) at one of the more than 9,000 Passport Acceptance Facilities nationwide with all necessary documents. It is best to call ahead, as many places have specific hours when they process passport applications.
  • Expedite Applications: Same as above. An Expedite Application is not to be confused with a Rush Application or with the services provided by a Passport Expediting Service, which is explained below.
  • Rush Applications: In the case of an emergency, a U.S. citizen can appear at one of 13 regional passport agencies. For those for whom travel to one of these agencies would be difficult or impossible, there are private passport expediting services that will help for an additional fee, generally about $100 over the passport cost. The Travel Industry Association (TIA) provides helpful information on providers of this service nationwide at their site GetAPassportNow.

    How Much Does It Cost?
  • Adults age 16 and older: The total is $97, which includes a passport application fee of $67 and an execution fee of $30. There is an additional fee for an Expedite Application.
  • Children ages 15 and under: The total is $82, which includes a passport application fee of $52 and an execution fee of $30. There is an additional fee for an Expedite Application.

    Methods of Payment

The 14 Passport Agencies accept virtually all credit cards, debit/check cards, checks (personal, certified, cashiers' or travelers'), money orders (U.S. Postal, international, currency exchange) and bank drafts. Both the fees and the $12 surcharge (included in the application fee) are combined into one payment to the U.S. Department of State.
